Scout Christmas Outing 2009

Toboganning 19/12/09

Hi All,

On Saturday 19th December 2009 we took the Scouts toboganning at the Snowdome in Tamworth for their annual Christmas outing.

19 Scouts and 1 Leader donned their Winter woolies and hurtled down the main slope, cramming in as many runs as they could in the allotted session time of 30 minutes!

There were some spectacular crashes and lots of dodgy manouevres going on but everyone had a great time, told by the massive grins on their faces!

Before our session started we had a meal in the local McDonalds and then walked to the Snowdome, helping us to acclimatize to the cold.

After our 30 minutes on the slope, we then gathered outside the entrance underneath two snow making machines to perform an Investiture ceremony for 5 of our new Members; Jacob D, Ben, James P, Adam E & Lewis.

Welcome to the Troop!

After what seemed like an age the snow blowers eventually fired up, bringing a cool close to the evening.

So that's it for 2009.

We have had a very successful year and done loads of interesting things including; winning the raft race, qualifying for the County football competition finals, winning medals in the swimming gala, doing the Expedition Challenge, Brumventure, District camp, County camp, 1st JOTA/JOTI participation, solar party, stargazing and many other camps and events.

Check out the Group's Red Border website for a pictorial record of what we have done.

The Troop has grown to one of the largest in the Group's history and long may we continue to enrich and develope the lives of the young people who turn up every week.

I would like to wish the Scouts a very Happy Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.

I would also like to thank the Leadership team for all their hard work over the year, without the dedication of whom we would not have such a thriving Scout Troop.

Finally I would like to thank the handful of parents who volunteer their time and help out at many of the events, again without whom we would not have such a successful Troop. Have you ever considered taking up a uniformed position? See me for details!

We look forward to seeing you all back again in 2010, fit and well.

Our first meeting will be on Monday 11th January.

Enjoy the Christmas holidays!

All the best,

Adam

Autumn Camp 2009

Autumn Camp 2009

Hi Scouts,

During the weekend of 27/28/29th November 2009 we took 12 bold Scouts to Willesley Scout Camp site for an Autumn Camp.

We arrived in the dark on Friday night and pitched our tents, the garage and dining shelters plus the 1st aid and store tents, in the dull glow of the minibus headlamps!

After a few hours there was a lovely big campfire on the go and we cooked hot-dogs and made hot drinks for everyone before going to bed.

It was a cold and wet night...

On Saturday morning the embers of the fire were still burning and the campfire was soon going again, providing some warmth for the early risers.

A hot Brekkie and drinks was welcomed by all and it was soon time to explore the campsite whilst the Leaders tidied up the camp and made sure the tents would survive the weekend!

Later on some Go-Karting and climbing was organised for those who wanted to have a go, whilst others gathered and chopped wood in readiness for the bigger campfire in the evening.

Lunch was soup, bread and hot or cold drinks plus crisps, biscuits and fruit.

At approximately 3pm we all gathered in the Chapel and Invested the newest members of our Troop as follows;

Harry, James A, Pia, Jenny, Zak, Kelsey & Luke R

This was carried out in the traditional way by asking the Scouts to place their left hand over the Union & Group flags and making the Scout salute with their right hand whilst reciting the Promise.

I explained the meaning of the Promise they were about to make and asked the Scouts to provide some examples of the Scout Law, which they did most satisfactorily.

On Saturday evening we cooked spaghetti bolognese and then eventually settled down by the campfire to sing some songs, tell stories, have a laugh and roast one or two hula-hoops attached to twigs and branches!

We had a supper of chocolate biscuits, fruit and hot or cold drinks before finally retiring to bed.

It was a cold and very wet night...

On Sunday morning the embers of the big campfire were still burning despite the weather, which helped raise morale as the Scouts eventually rose from their tents to the sound of rain drops on canvas!

Breakfast consisted of lashings of bacon, sausage, beans, egg and bread plus hot drinks before starting the inaugural task of breaking Camp.

The ground was a mudbath and everything was starting to get covered in thick brown sludge, Leaders & Scouts included!

The Troop were given plenty of freetime in between taking the tents down, packing their kit away and loading up the mininbus and trailer, so that the whole of the day wasn't taken up doing Camp chores.

We eventually left Camp around 3pm and headed back to HQ to unload and put away some of the more relatively clean equipment into stores.

And so endeth the last Camp for this year.

OK, so the weather was cold & wet, the ground was boggy and we never got time to make Angel Delight.

But we survived!

And despite the poor conditions everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and make the most of the time outdoors.

It was a young and relatively inexperienced Troop who made the effort to come away so late in the year and characters were definitely strengthened.

They sometimes required a lot of coercing to get things done but they did it and for that they made me proud.

Just think Scouts, our next Camp should be in far better climes so everything from now on will be a doddle!

Well done to;

Tom, Ryan, Rahul, Jenny, Kelsey, Luke R, Pia, James A, Lauren, Harry, Jacob B & Zak

for taking part and to all the parents who helped us load and unload the minibus & trailer, hung up the tents to dry and washed up.

All the best,

The Scout Leaders

Scout Meeting 23/11/09 - Investitures & a Presentation!

Investitures
Wood Badge

Hi All,

During our Scout meeting on Monday 23rd November 2009 we had plenty to celebrate as we Invested 1 Scout, 1 Young Leader, 2 Explorer Young Leaders and yours truly received his Wood Badge.

Vincent, who joins us from the Cubs, was Invested into the Scouts in the traditional way by placing his left hand over the Union & Group flags and making the Scout salute with his right hand whilst reciting the Promise.

We also Invested Jason as a Young Leader and Elle & Nicola as Explorer Young Leaders.

Welcome all to the worldwide family of Scouting.

Dave Evans, District Training Advisor, was also invited along to present me (Adam) with my Wood Badge. Hooray!

The Wood Badge is a Scouting program and Award for adults in the Scout associations around the world. The Wood Badge course is designed so that adult Scouters can learn; in as practical a way possible, the skills and methods of Scouting. On completion, participants are still awarded the beads to recognize the significant achievement in leadership and direct service to young people, and to welcome them to membership of 1st Gilwell Park Scout Group.

After all of the Investitures & presentations, we got the Scouts to practice putting up some tents in the light and then outside in the dark, in preparation for the Autumn Camp.

The evening was finished off with everyone receiving several pieces of lovely cake.

Scouting is fun!

All the best,

The Scout Leaders

Spot the ball - County Football Competition 2009!

County Football Competition 2009

On Saturday 21st November our Scouts took part in the County Football Competition at Stockland Green Leisure Centre.

A total of 9 teams took part, which were split into 2 leagues of 5 and 4.

The teams were then made to play each other once and points were awarded as follows;

3 points for a Win
1 point for Draw
0 points for a Loss

The winners of each League then played each other in the final.

Our team lost their 1st match 4-1 however, the score was helped a little by some very dodgy refereeing decisions!

We drew our 2nd game 1-1, a fair result we felt.

In our last game, we found our form and battered the opposition 6-4. We counted 7 and we think the referee miscounted!

We just missed out on a place in the final however, the 1st game we lost in the earlier stages was to the eventual winners of the competition, Tame Valley.

Well done to them.

We would like to thank the following Scouts for taking part;

Matthew, Reece, Jacob H, Connor, Ben, Ryan, Jacob D & Zach

We would also like to thank those parents who stayed behind to cheer on our gallant team.

All the best,

Skip, Adam & Jason

District Swimming Gala 2009

Hi All,

On Saturday 14th November our Scouts took part in the District Swimming Gala held at Wyndley Pool.

We provided a full team of 7 swimmers which meant that we were able to take part in all of the races.

The format of the evening was as follows;

Scouts - Under 12's Freestyle, Back Stroke & Breast Stroke
Scouts - Under 14's Freestyle, Back Stroke & Breast Stroke
Scouts - Relay
Scouts - Diving

Reece & Matthew both came first in their individual races and Jacob B came 3rd in his. Excellent!

At the end of all of the races we managed to qualify for 3 finals; the under 14's Freestyle, the under 12's Breast Stroke and the Relay.

Reece & Matthew both won Silver medals in their individual events and we just missed out on the medals in the Relay. Fantastic result!

Reece also put up a good performance in the diving.

I would like to thank the following Scouts who gave up their time on Saturday evening to take part;

Reece, Jenny, Jacob H, Matthew, Kisan, Vincent & Jacob B

They all gave 110% and did the Group proud.

I would also like to thank the parents who watched from the spectator area, for giving up their time and supporting the team, and a special thank-you to Jenny's mum for joining me at the poolside.

Well done to everyone!

All the best,

Adam

AUTUMN RUMMAGE SALE NOVEMBER 2009

Well, the sun shone and the Rummagers came in good numbers ready for the opening at 10.30.  When the doors were opened, in they all came, many heading straight  for the ladies and gents fashions, many more to the Bric-a-Brac whilst the children aimed for the toys and games leaving room for the collectors to have a good browse through all the books and videos that were assembled for them to peruse.

To cater for all their demands were parents, supporters and even a cub instructor!

An hour later and it was all over with very little left on the tables.

Thanks to those of you who brought items to the HQ - as well as those who sorted and were there on the day - as  we had a very successful Sale achieving an incredible income of £453.

Remembrance Day Parade 2009

Remembrance Day Parade 2009

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Emily and Adam would like to thank;

Ryan, Tom, Rahul, Jacob H, Jacob B, James F, James A, Lauren, Dominic, Jenny, Pia, Connor, Ben & Luke R

for attending the event, braving the cold and for being such great ambassadors to the Scout Movement.

Scout Meeting 02/11/09

Scout Meeting 02/11/09

Hi All,

On Monday 2nd November we celebrated the story of Guy Fawkes with our very own bonfire and fireworks display.

We also celebrated the Group's (2nd Wylde Green) 80th birthday.

Before going outside, the Troop were given a brief history of the Gunpowder Plot and a copy of the firework code was read out by one of the Scouts.

Out of our 4 Patrols, 2 of them were tasked with building bonfires, one Patrol was in charge of cooking hotdogs and the fourth Patrol made Guy himself.

The two bonfires were different in their design and both burned well throughout the meeting.

As you will see from the pics, the Guy was both 'armless (and legless) and was punished a treat!

Hotdogs were dished out to all and the evening was finished off with some fireworks.

At the end of our meeting, we were given a lovely piece of birthday cake.

Happy Birthday 2nd Wylde Green Scout Group!

All that remains to say is have a safe week and please remember the firework code.

All the best,

The Scout Leaders

JOTA/JOTI 2009

JOTA/JOTI 2009

Hi All,

Please click on the above image to see more pictures taken during the Jamboree On The Air/Jamboree On The Internet (JOTA/JOTI) event which took place over the weekend of 17th/18th October 2009.

jotajoti2009small

What is the Jamboree-On-The-Air?

The JOTA is an annual event in which about half-a-million Scouts and Guides all over the world make contacts with each other by means of amateur radio. Short-wave radio signals carry their voices to virtually any corner of the world. It's the shear excitement of having a live conversation with a fellow Scout or Guide at some other place in the world that attracts so many young people to this event. JOTA is a true Jamboree during which Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are shared. It’s a unique opportunity for each individual Scout to get the real feeling of belonging to a worldwide movement.

What is the Jamboree-On-The-Internet?

Similarly to the JOTA, the Jamboree-On-The-Internet connects Scouts using Internet techniques. The JOTI is a separate event, but held on the same weekend as the Jamboree-On-the-Air. Units can choose to take part in either one, or both events.

Basically, the aim of the event is to make contact with other Scout Groups worldwide using radio communication and/or Internet chat or voice.

During the event, which we ran from 8pm Saturday night through to 1pm Sunday morning, we set-up an amateur radio station inside HQ to allow us to make contact via radio communication and, we also set-up a couple of notebook PC's to allow us to make contact over the Internet, using a mobile broadband connection.

To make allowances for the different timezones across the world and to sustain interest if contacts were intermittant, we set-up camp inside HQ with the pop-up tents for a sleepover!

There was also an Xbox 360 and a DVD player plus projector on offer for further entertainment.

We asked the Scouts to bring along some food for a little midnight feasting, play games, read, chat and watch some films, as well as take part in the main JOTA/JOTI theme of the evening.

In the morning we cooked bacon ans sausage sandwiches for breakfast.

The agenda for the weekend was as follows;

Arrive at our Scout HQ on Sat 17th Oct around 8pm

Take part in JOTA/JOTI event and other activities on offer

Sleepover in pop-up tents

Breakfast

Arrange for parents to collect from HQ at 1pm on Sunday 18th Oct

Have a load of fun for 16 hours!

Although the radio activity was a little sparse, we made plenty of contacts on the Internet using IRC (text) and Teamspeak (voice).

The event was a great success and although most of us got no sleep Saturday night(!), we would have to say that the Scouts had a fantastic time!

We will definitely be taking part in the event again next year.

All the best,

Adam & Carl

Brumventure 2009

Brumventure 2009

Hi All,

Latest pictures from our participation in the Brumventure 2009 event, which took place at Pikes Pool, near Bromsgrove.

We entered one of the largest contingent of Scouts from any one group in the district and we took part in the canoeing, forestry, master at arms, camp cook and pioneering badges.

It was a fantastic event and all 9 members of our troop who signed up for the event received their badges at the end of the weekend.

Brumventure will continue to run every year and it is an excellent opportunity to gain a badge in a short space of time.

Well done to all those who took part!

Hope you enjoy the photo’s!

Hi All,

Latest pictures from our participation in the Expedition Challenge badge event, which took place on 3rd & 4th October in the beautiful Wye Valley.

During the expedition, our team had to;

- journey for at least 4 hours a day
- use a map to keep track of where they were
- play a full part in the team
- achieve at least one goal (cooking a hot meal)
- stay overnight in a hostel

Our team of 5 did exceptionally well and received their badges at the end of the 2 day event.

2nd Practise Hike on the Leicestershire Round

Practise Hike Sun 27th Sept 09

On Sunday 27th Sept we took our team of 5 Challengers to Leicestershire for a 12.5 mile hike around 'Battle of Bosworth' country, in preparation for the Expedition Challenge on 3rd-4th October.

Once again the Challengers were asked to navigate the route on their own and cook a meal on the way.

The weather was absolutely glorious for hiking and the team did very well with the distance and cooked an excellent meal of rice and pasta.

They should have no problem with the Challenge this weekend.

We finished up with a lovely fish & chip supper at the 'Batter of Bosworth' chip shop in Market Bosworth, to round off a perfect day.

Click on the above image to see some more pictures and video.

Good luck to our Challengers this Saturday!

We will let you know how they get on.

Scout Meeting 28/09/09

Scout Meeting 28/09/09

Hi All,

On Monday night we taught the Scouts how to lay and light a fire, a skill that will be very useful on all the camps we will be going on.

However when we are on camp, the Scouts need to remember that they will have to collect the wood as well as chop it themselves first!

We also organised our troop into 4 Patrols, with Patrol Leaders & Assistant Patrol Leaders chosen to give our younger members the benefit of their experience.

Each Patrol managed to get a great fire going and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, especially when the marshmallows came out for toasting!

1st Practise Hike in the Derbyshire Dales

Practise Hike Sat 19th Sept 09

Hi All,

Please click on the above image to see more pictures taken during our practise hike in the Derbyshire dales on Saturday 19th Sept.

This is our 1st practise session in preparation for the Expedition Challenge 2009 being held early in October.

We will be fielding a team of 5 in the Challenge this year, which is taking place in the beautiful setting of the Wye Valley.

The weather was perfect for walking, if a little warm, and the team coped admirably with all that was required of them.

A second practise hike is taking place this Sunday in the Leicestershire area.

I will keep you posted with our progress!

Sweden comes to Douay Road!

International Module Mon 7th Sept 09

Hi All,

Please click on the above image to see some more pics taken during our first Scout meeting back after the Summer holidays.

We made the evening a little bit special by holding a themed event, and the theme was SWEDEN!

This is because the 22nd World Scout Jamboree is being held in Kristianstad, Sweden, in 2011.

It was also part of Carl, Emily and myself's leadership training and we thought it would be a nice way of welcoming the new members to our troop (mainly from cubs), of which there are many!

We therefore had a fun evening of activities planned for the troop, which included some Swedish cuisine, Swedish games, speaking some Swedish language and a Swedish picture quiz, all to the sounds of ABBA in the background.

We also asked the Scouts to wear the colours of the Swedish flag, which are blue and yellow.

And yes, I wore some blonde plaits?!

Enjoy!

SUPPORTERS CLUB FLOWER SHOW 2009

The sun shone and the visitors came in good numbers to view the hundreds of exhibits displayed by members of the Supporters Club at the 63rd Annual Horticultural and Flower Show held at the HQ on Saturday 22nd August.

There were flowers to delight, floral displays to admire, vegetables of every size and hue which amazed, incredible handicrafts plus delightful cakes and jams to tempt the taste-buds!

Folks arrived, young and old, for an afternoon of pure delight taking great pleasure in viewing the exhibits, busying themselves with the purchase of raffle tickets as well as enjoying tea and buttered scones in the garden area.

Prizes were presented by local Councillors Robert Alden, Bob Beauchamp and Gareth Compton then followed the grand auction of many of the exhibited vegetables as well as some cakes and jams then the sale of exhibited flowers.

A truly spectacular occasion with a bonus of over £300 raised for Group funds.

Sunlight & Buried Treasure!

From Solar Party 16/08/09

From Solar Party 16/08/09

Hi All,

On Sunday 16th August we attended a solar party event organised by the Birmingham Astronomical Society in Sutton park.

During the frequent periods of glorious sunshine we were able to see the sun through solar telescopes, a normal telescope fitted with a special solar filter and a ingenious instrument called a solarscope, which projected the sun's image onto a viewing plate for us all to see.

There was also a homemade instrument set up to measure the temperature of the light spectrum from the sun and a special camera connected to one of the solar telescopes which showed us the chemical composition of one of the sun's layers.

It was a very interesting and educational couple of hours.

Afterwards as the weather was so nice, we decided to try our hand at geocaching!

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate containers hidden outdoors, called geocaches, sign the logbook inside the box and then return the geocache back to its original location for the next person to find.

After following a set of clues centred around the Jamboree stone, we eventually found the geocache hidden at the base of a tree and recorded our names in the logbook.

As far as we know, this is the first geocache to be found by members of the 6th Sutton Colfield East District and the experience was very much enjoyed by all.

Geochaching is another activity we hope to be doing more of as a troop over the next few months and we may even hide our own geocache for others to find!

That's all for now, enjoy the rest of the Summer.....

Rough Close Camp 09

Nights Away Camp 09

Hi All,

Please click on the above image to see more pictures taken during our Summer camp at Rough Close, Coventry.

Over the course of the weekend the Scouts put up a Patrol tent, a dining shelter, set up a cutting square and learned how to use axes and saws safely. They later collected and cut up wood for the camp fire which was lit every day.

The Scouts also did most of the food preparation and cooking and I have to say that the chicken fajitas were particularly tasty!

In their freetime the Scouts played football, cricket and we launched several types of rocket. They also enjoyed wandering off and exploring the campsite.

At night we played a wide game involving some very impressive glowsticks. See the video for some very impressive lightsabre action!

The weather was mixed and we managed to avoid the rain whilst putting up and taking down the tents, result!

The camp was also used as an assessment camp for myself, Adam, in order to gain my nights away permit.

I am happy to report that I passed and I should receive my nights away permit in September.

I would like to thank everyone who helped me achieve this award and to Dave Evans, for taking time out of his weekend to come and do the assessment.

I would also like to thank all the Scouts who participated in this event and their parents, who helped us with transport, etc.

We hope to be running another camping event in September.

Enjoy!

All the best,

Adam
