Spring Activity Camp March 2011

Spring Activity Camp March 2011

Hi All,

During the weekend of 25/26/27th March 2011, 8 of our Scouts made their way to Blackwell Court near Bromsgrove to take part in our first Camp of the year.

Jason & I had already travelled over the night before to unload most of the Group camping equipment and pitch the gararge tent & dining shelter.
We did this to give the Scouts somewhere to shelter if the weather was particularly bad and to give them more time to concentrate on putting up their own tents.

The Scouts arrived in good weather and with the help of their parents they managed to pitch their tents with the minimum of fuss.

In just a few hours the camp was relatively complete and supper was soon on the go.
We cooked burgers, sausages & onions in baps and made hot drinks and biscuits available for everyone who wanted them before starting the long task of preparing for bed! We also had time to start a small Camp fire to round off a pleasant evening.

It was a chilly night but everyone settled into bed without any difficulties.

On Saturday morning we awoke to a dull and chilly start but this did not deter the Troop from getting out of bed and preparing themselves for the day ahead.

Some cereals, bacon or sausage baps and drinks were welcomed by all for breakfast and it was soon time to begin the programme of activites organised for the day.

At 9.15am we had our first flag break before the Scouts were let loose on the site! Emily also joined us for the day.

Our Troop took part in 6 activities on Saturday and 2 more on Sunday.
The activities included; crate stacking, pedal karts, zip wire, team challenges, obstacle course, abseilin, grass sledging & orienteering.

Lunch was sandwiches with a choice of fillings, sausage rolls, hot or cold drinks plus crisps, biscuits and fruit.

The temperature remained low but this did not deter the Troop from having a good time.

Dinner was a choice of either spaghetti bolognese or sweet & sour chicken, with pasta. Pudding was a choice of fairy cakes or bananas, with custard.
Those Scouts not involved with the cooking had plenty of free time to explore the site and also collected wood for an alter fire later on.

We had a supper of marshmallows, biscuits and hot or cold drinks before finally retiring to bed. Some of the Scouts also had a go at making smores and roasted their marshmallows on an amazing alter fire which burned long after the Scouts had gone to bed.

It was another cold night.

On Sunday morning we awoke to slightly better weather, which meant that the tents would hopefully be nice and dry by the time it came to pack away.
Good weather on the day you break camp is always number 1 on a Scout Leader’s wish list!

Breakfast consisted of lashings of bacon, sausage, beans, egg and bread plus hot/cold drinks.

At 9.30am we had our final flag break before starting the second day of activities.

At approximately 12.30pm we had lunch, similar to that what we had on Saturday (and anything else that was left), and then started the inaugural task of breaking camp.

At 3.30pm we Invested Amelia-Lee & Liam into the Troop as parents began arriving to pick up their young ones.
We also celebrated Pia's 13th birthday with balloons, banners & cake. Happy birthday Pia!

Many thanks to all those Scouts who took part and we hope you all had a good time.

Jason & I were very impressed with the way they all got on with the various camp duties when asked and sometimes without prompting, such as cooking, washing up, fetching water and so on.

The Scouts behaviour was exemplary and is just how a Scout Camp should be run.

I would also like to thank all those parents who assisted the Scouts in pitching their tents and a special thank-you to Will's dad Dave, who helped us unload & load the minibus and take down the 'big' tents! We are always very grateful.

Going to camp is a major reason why young people join the Scouts, the fun of living in a tent can be unbeatable. You will hopefully appreciate how much effort goes into running a camp and we try to organise and attend as many as is feasibly possible, so that all Members of our Troop get the opportunity to attend at least one over the year.

Our next camp will be in May, which will be the District Activity Camp!

All the best,

Calico & Chief

Chase Walk 2011

Chase Walk 2011

Hi All,

On Saturday 19th March we entered a team of 6 Scouts into this year’s Chase Walk event.

The Scouts met near HQ at 7.45am for a brief equipment check and then made their way to the official starting point near the Birches Vally Forest Centre in Cannock Chase.

I had to get there earlier than the Scouts this year to assist the Scout Comms team with check-in and do various walking sweeps throughout the day picking up any strays!

After registering our team with the organisers, the Scouts then had to wait for an official equipment and safety check before finally being allowed to start the walk at around 9.08am.

The weather forecast was sunny and dry, becoming warm after a cold and frosty start. It was a lovely day for a hike, if a little too warm at times.

The route was approximately 22.3km long and the team had to check in at 7 bases in total along the way, including one near the town of Brocton and Walton-on-the-Hill.

Our team did extremely well and made excellent time throughout the day.

All of the extra map reading sessions and practise hike had obviously paid off. We were very impressed.

Please click on the image above to see more pictures taken during the event.

The team reached the base at the finishing point at approx 2.45pm and were in very good spirits.

It is the ony the second time we have entered a team in this event since it was opened up for the Scouts over 10 years ago.

We hope to enter another team in the Chase Walk event again next year.

Many thanks to all those parents who helped with transport, we are very grateful.

Yours in Scouting,

The Scout Leaders

Chase Walk Practise Hike 12th March 2011

Practise Hike Sat 12th March 2011

Hi All,

On Saturday 12th March we took our Chase Walk team for a practise hike on Cannock Chase.

The walking conditions were favourable, not too hot & not too cold.

The Scouts walked a total distance of approximately 10 miles (22km) and they all had a go at navigating using a map and compass.

This year’s Chase Walk event will take place on Saturday March 19th, 2011.

The team performed very well and should have no trouble at all walking in the national event.

Kind regards,

Calico & Chief

Gang Show 2011

Gang Show 2011

Hi All,

During February half-term, the Sutton Coldfield Scouts Gang show was held at Bishop Vesey's Grammar School.

For 5 nights, Members from the Sutton Coldfield District perfomed a variety of songs and sketches in front of large audiences.

This year 2 Members of our Group took park, Pia & Byron.

They were very, very good.

Graham (Kaa) and myself (Chief) also helped out front of house.

The Gang show is held every 2 years and it is an excellent way to make new friends and have fun.

We hope to have more Members take part next time around.

All the best,

Chief

This means that Scouts from the 6th will be representing the District at the County competition in April.

Well done to all those who took part, including Harry who was unable to attend on the day but will take part in the final.

Air Rifle Shooting 06/02/2011

Air Rifle Shooting 06/02/11

Hi All,

On Sunday 6th February we restarted our association with the Sutton Coldfield Rifle & Pistol Club.

A good turn out of Scouts assembled in the clubhouse for a short safety briefing, followed by some training and then straight into shooting targets from 20 yards.

The troop were also given the opportunity to try different types of air rifles, from the very basic to a competition hunting version with telescopic sight.

We were also allowed to use the clubs spotting scopes to zoom in on the targets.

The Troop conducted themselves very responsibly and several Scouts showed a high level of skill in marksmanship.

The event will be held once a month for the next 5 months and will be used to achieve the Master at Arms badge if desired.

Members of the Troop will also be allowed to attend during normal club sessions should they wish to take their interest further.

Click on the image above for more pictures.

It was a very enjoyable couple of hours and many thanks to Charles, Peter and other members of the club for their time and effort.

Best regards,

Calico & Chief

Scout Meeting 14/02/2011

Scout Meeting Mon 14th Feb 2011

Hi All,

On Monday 14th February we celebrated Chinese new year with some fun & games in Sutton Park.

We first of all organised a wide game called 'Jail Break', which is a different version of hide and seek.

We had planned to do several other wide games during the evening but this one proved so popular that the Scouts wanted to play it over and over again!

Half-way through our meeting we served up sweet & sour chicken with rice and there were plenty of prawn crackers to try.

Nicola, our young Leader, also tucked into some Chinese spare ribs all to herself !

At the end of our meeting we launched several Chinese lanterns up into the cold night air, which disappeared over the treetops never to be seen again.

We hope to do many more activities outdoors throughout the year.

All the best,
