Stargazing at Kingsbury water park 11/02/09

international-year-of-astronomy
On Wednesday 11th February at 8pm we took 5 Scouts to Kingsbury water park for an evening of stargazing, in conjunction with the Heart of England Astronomical Society.

Roger Pickard, president of the British Astronomical Society, gave us a talk all about stars entitled, "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star", and another speaker discussed what would be appearing in the night sky over the next few months.

When the clouds eventually cleared, we were then treated to a view of the night time sky with local experts!

Each Scout was given the opportunity to look at the Moon, Orion's belt, various stars and constellations through several types of binoculars and telescopes.

The highlight of the evening was being treated to a view of Saturn, as it finally rose high enough in the sky to observe.

The event drew to a close at 10pm.

Since 2009 is the international year of astronomy, we will be organising some more stargazing events throughout the year.

Astronomy is looking up!
