Wylde Green Whist Club

Whist ClubTo allow for some major improvement works to be carried out to the Scout Hall, starting on Monday 4th February, our weekly Whist Drives will be held just a short distance away (one bus stop) at the Community Hall and Library situated in Emscote Drive, off Little Green Lanes, Wylde Green. Click on the "Relocation Map" link at the top to see where this is.

This is a light and well-heated Hall, just recently decorated and complete with a kitchen available for our use.

Whist Drives will continue to be held each Monday (except March 24th and May 5th which are Public Holidays) and timings will be the same with doors opening at 1.00 pm for commencement of play at 1.30 pm (and closing at 4.30 pm).

I look forward to seeing you all there.

Dick Eaton Steward.

P S We expect to be back at the Scout Hall on May 12th but will confirm this later.

A Personal Appeal from the Group Chairman

BuildingThe present Scout Headquarters, built with both foresight and under the guidance of Phil Baker, the Group’s founder, dates from 1957 and over the last 51 years has served the Group well and during this time, many hundreds of boys and now girls have enjoyed the benefit and excitement of Scouting.

The building, known also as the Philip Baker Hall, is in regular use most days of each week not only by our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts but also by our Supporters Club with their weekly fund-raising Whist Drives and other events, the District for their meetings together with the 78th Birmingham Brownies plus the 84th Birmingham Guides!

All Sections of our Scout Group are thriving with a full colony of Beavers, a full pack of Cubs and an ever growing contingent of Scouts and there is every indication that the success the Group has enjoyed, through it’s dedicated Leaders, over the past 50 years will continue for the next 50, at least.

Various monies have been spent over the years on new equipment, new facilities and on the existing building to ensure that the building has been properly maintained for current use and for the generations to come. It is now, however, showing considerable ‘signs of age’ and having engaged professional advisers and obtained competitive tenders, commencing very soon will be some major refurbishments and improvements, these works including

  • the installation of double glazed PVC security windows

  • the replacement of all inside wall linings with insulated panelling

  • new, effective, high efficiency ceramic heaters

  • new fully insulated metal roofing panels to replace the existing corrugated sheeting

which will give us a building with lower maintenance costs, lower heating bills and overall, fit for the 21st Century and you can follow the progress on our new specially created website.

As you would imagine, the cost of these works , some of which have to be carried out by highly specialised contractors, are considerable, indeed the total amount to which we are committed is in the order of £97,000 and the purpose of this note from me is to ask you, quite simply, to donate some money towards this cost

Sutton Coldfield Municipal Charities have already offered a substantial contribution and to which we will be adding all of the money from our ‘reserves’ leaving a requirement to raise just £7000 which, by using the benefit of the Gift Aid scheme, reduces to just £5500.

If you have a child or children in the Group now, if you have ever had children in the Group, if you or your loved ones have ever been a member of the Group or have been connected with it in any way, please now show your support and send to the Group an amount - large or small - as your personal donation.

Any amount you give, I promise you, will be much appreciated.

With the advance sincere thanks of myself and everybody in the 2nd Wylde Green Scout Group

Gwyn Lloyd - Group Chairman

P S - The Leaders will soon also be suggesting novel and interesting ways in which the children themselves can, additionally, make their own contribution.

P P S - Also do try and come along to the Summer Fair at 2.00 pm on May 10th to see for yourself the improvements which by then will have been made.

Rummage Sale Appeal

Rummage Sale We have seen a certain amount of RUMMAGE gathered in the Store so if this has been as a result of effort by you, a BIG THANK YOU.

As you would know, due to start quite soon are some major building improvement works. In order to accommodate a (likely) February 4th commencement date, the Spring Rummage Sale has had to be brought forward a month, BUT, having had a shorter ‘collection time’ we do not have sufficient content - especially clothing and toys - for a good sale.
We do need your help to ensure that we have sufficient to sell.

Firstly, having had, no doubt, many new items for Christmas, please send down to the Hall ANY amount of old or discarded men’s, ladies and children’s, clothing as well as bags and shoes etc. and any, now, discarded toys and games. Secondly, please speak to all of your immediate neighbours with your offer to relieve them of general RUMMAGE in the form of

  • Men’s, ladies and children’s clothing and shoes

  • Handbags of all shapes and sizes

  • Linen, curtains, fabrics and the like

  • Toys, games, books, records, CD’s, DVD’s

  • General bric-a-brac including china, glass, jewellery, garden tools, lamps, wooden bits, pots and pans, plates, old radios, TVs, kettles, teas-maids, cases, vases, etc.

Please do ensure as much content as possible is sent down each week in January.

The RUMMAGE SALE is only a success if the people there to buy have lots of the items that have been collected for sale.

GWYN LLOYD Group Chairman

P.S. If, albeit unlikely, your neighbours have no rummage at present, do ask them to save any for your collection for the next Rummage Sale.

Cubs - Temporary Change of venue

Cubs Logo Welcome back to you all and Happy New Year

As you will know from reading the last Red Border Articles that went out before Christmas, our Scout Hut is having a new roof and refurbishment starting in February.

This means that all sections are moving out for 3 months. We are all going to different venues as the leaders from all sections felt their meetings should be kept on the same night and at the same time if at all possible. We have managed to do this for the cub section thanks to the kindness of the Wylde Green United Reform Church.

I have attached a programme for the next 3 months and all meetings prior to the 4th February will be in at our own hut. I would ask you to refer to the attached so you know where to meet

As from the Tuesday 5th February 2008 we will be meeting at Wylde Green United Reform Church, Britwell Road. Click the "Location Map" button above to see where this is.

We are hoping to be back in our hut by the beginning of May but will keep you posted as works get underway.

If you have any queries on the above or attached programme please do not hesitate to contact us.

Beavers - Temporary Change of Venue

BeaversWelcome back to you all and Happy New Year

As you will know from reading the last Red Border Articles that went out before Christmas, our Scout Hut is having a new roof and refurbishment starting in February.

This means that all sections are moving out for 3 months. We are all going to different venues as the leaders from all sections felt their meetings should be kept on the same night and at the same time if at all possible. We have managed to do this for the beaver section thanks to the kindness of the 2nd Sutton Coldfield West Scout Group.

I have attached a programme for the next 3 months and all meetings prior to the 4th February will be in at our own hut. I would ask you to refer to the attached so you know where to meet

As from the Monday 4th February 2008 we will be meeting at the Scout Hut on Highbridge Road. If you drive down Highbridge Road from the Wychbold Hotel, Birmingham Road end, pass Addenbrooke Drive (on your left) and you carry on a few more houses and the Scout Hut driveway entrance is also left hand side between two houses. Looks like a narrow driveway and can easily be missed from the road so please keep a look out. We are hoping to be back in our hut by the beginning of May but will keep you posted as works get underway. Click the "Location Map" button above to see where this is.

You will also note that we are meeting at Sutton Coldfield Library on two nights but have had to change the day as the library is open late on a Tuesday. Again the same time 6.00pm – 7.15pm will apply.

If you have any queries on the above or attached programme please do not hesitate to contact us.

Yours in Scouting

Jane, Dave and Leah Phillips
