The present Scout Headquarters, built with both foresight and under the guidance of Phil Baker, the Group’s founder, dates from 1957 and over the last 51 years has served the Group well and during this time, many hundreds of boys and now girls have enjoyed the benefit and excitement of Scouting.
The building, known also as the Philip Baker Hall, is in regular use most days of each week not only by our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts but also by our Supporters Club with their weekly fund-raising Whist Drives and other events, the District for their meetings together with the 78
th Birmingham Brownies plus the 84
th Birmingham Guides!
All Sections of our Scout Group are thriving with a full colony of Beavers, a full pack of Cubs and an ever growing contingent of Scouts and there is every indication that the success the Group has enjoyed, through it’s dedicated Leaders, over the past 50 years will continue for the next 50, at least.
Various monies have been spent over the years on new equipment, new facilities and on the existing building to ensure that the building has been properly maintained for current use and for the generations to come. It is now, however, showing considerable ‘signs of age’ and having engaged professional advisers and obtained competitive tenders, commencing very soon will be some major refurbishments and improvements, these works including
- the installation of double glazed PVC security windows
- the replacement of all inside wall linings with insulated panelling
- new, effective, high efficiency ceramic heaters
- new fully insulated metal roofing panels to replace the existing corrugated sheeting
which will give us a building with lower maintenance costs, lower heating bills and overall, fit for the 21
st Century and you can follow the progress on our new specially created
website.
As you would imagine, the cost of these works , some of which have to be carried out by highly specialised contractors, are considerable, indeed the total amount to which we are committed is in the order of £97,000 and the purpose of this note from me is to ask you, quite simply, to donate some money towards this cost
Sutton Coldfield Municipal Charities have already offered a substantial contribution and to which we will be adding all of the money from our ‘reserves’ leaving a requirement to raise just £7000 which, by using the benefit of the Gift Aid scheme, reduces to just £5500.
If you have a child or children in the Group now, if you have ever had children in the Group, if you or your loved ones have ever been a member of the Group or have been connected with it in any way, please now show your support and send to the Group an amount - large or small - as your personal donation.
Any amount you give, I promise you, will be much appreciated.
With the advance sincere thanks of myself and everybody in the 2nd Wylde Green Scout Group
