District Scout Activity Camp May 2011

District Scout Activity Camp May 2011

Hi All,

During the weekend of 13/14/15th May 2011, 15 of our Scouts made their way to Blackwell Court near Bromsgrove to take part in this year’s District Scout activity camp.

We arrived in decent weather on the Friday evening and pitched all of the Scout sleeping tents, a Patrol tent and set-up all of the kitchen and dining equipment.
Jason and I had already gone over on the Thursday evening and pitched the garage tent plus another Patrol tent and moved in all of the camping equipment.
Emily also came over on the Friday evening to help us set-up camp.

Once again we had one of the largest numbers of Scouts on site!

In just a few hours the camp was complete and supper was soon on the go. We cooked burgers on baps and made hot drinks and biscuits available for everyone who wanted them before starting the long task of preparing for bed!
Some of the Troop also collected firewood ready for a camp fire on Saturday evening.
In between all of this, some of the Leaders were called to a meeting and briefed on the arrangements taking place over the next 2 days.

It was a cold night.

On Saturday morning we awoke to sunshine and many of the Troop were up & about very early in the morning, excited about the day ahead.

Some cereal, sausage/egg baps and drinks were welcomed by all for breakfast and it was soon time to begin the programme of activites organised for the day.

Note to Scouts, never let Christian cook sausages on camp, ha ha!

At 9.30am we had our first flag break before the Scouts were let loose on the site!

Our Troop was split into 2 teams and each team took part in 4 activities on Saturday and 2 more on Sunday.
Due to the number restrictions on activities, some of our Troop teamed up with Members from the 5th S/C East Scouts.

The activities included; tree trek, grass sledges, giant's ladder, high all aboard, indoor climbing, multi scramble & crate stacking.

Lunch was sandwiches with a choice of fillings, sausage rolls, hot or cold drinks plus crisps, biscuits and fruit.

The weather was a mix of sunshine & showers, but this did not prevent any of the activities from taking place.

At approximately 6.30pm, we entered a team into the District 6-a-side football competition.
We managed a draw in two of our games and only lost two of our other games by a very narrow margin.
We came 5th in the league.

For dinner we had a choice of spaghetti bolognese or chicken/cheese, with pasta. Pudding was fairy cakes & custard!

A wide game was organised for all of the Scouts & Leaders to take part in following dinner and afterwards, there was just enough time to get a camp fire going.

We had a supper of marshmallows, biscuits and hot or cold drinks before finally retiring to bed. Some of the Scouts roasted their marshmallows on the alter fire.

It was another cold night.

On Sunday morning we awoke to some more sunshine, which meant that the tents would hopefully be nice and dry by the time it came to pack away.
Good weather on the day you break camp is always number 1 on a Scout Leader’s wish list!

Breakfast consisted of lashings of bacon, sausage, beans, egg and bread plus hot/cold drinks.

At 9.30am we had our final flag break before starting the second day of activities.

At approximately 1.00pm we had lunch, similar to that what we had on Saturday (and anything else that was left), and then started the inaugural task of breaking camp.

At 3.30pm we had final flag down and parents began arriving to pick up their young ones. I would imagine that the first port of call for most Scouts would be a nice warm bath!

Many thanks to all those Scouts who took part and I hope you all had a good time.

I would also like to thank all those parents who gave up some of their time and assisted us with setting up & breaking camp and helped the Scouts pitch their tents. We know who you are and we are very grateful!

Going to camp is a major reason why young people join the Scouts, the fun of living in a tent can be unbeatable. You will hopefully appreciate how much effort goes into running a camp and we try to organise and attend as many as is feasibly possible, so that all Members of our Troop get the opportunity to attend at least one over the year.

Our next camp will be in June, which will be a family camp!

All the best,

The Scout Leaders

2nd Wylde Green Scout Group Summer Fair 2011

Hi everybody

Well, I have just about finished counting the money taken at the Summer Fair and as you would know
if you were there, we all had a great afternoon at the Tombolas, the Raffles, the Barbecue, the Plant
Stall and the Cake Stall as well as having great fun taking part - and sometimes getting wet - on a whole
collection of Games and attractions.

Each Stall was well stocked and special thanks must go to Dick Eaton who grew and supplied pretty well all that was for sale on the Plant stall. Equal thanks to the many parents and children who made and brought an incredible number of cakes for sale. Not to be outdone were Debbie and Geoff on what must have been the best ever collection of prizes - donated by you - for the family Tombola. All the Stalls were colourful and all attracted eager participants. Likewise on the Games, both inside and out and here the children, plus many of the adults, had a fantastic time at the Lucky Dip, the Tin Cans, the Bash-a-Rat, the Soccer Spin, the Play-your-cards-right game, the Bowling Alley and in the ever popular Stocks. There was great deal of interest too with both the Whisky and the Wine Raffle.

To staff all of these attractions required a small army of people and many thanks to all of them including several members of The Supporters Club together with Luella Keeley, Julie and Mark Underwood, Ginnie and Mike Adams, Peter Hewston, Ian Banks, Angela and Andy Bagshaw, Joan Bromwell, Petya Spencer and Jayne Hinsley, willing parents, many involving for the first time! Also involving were various Leaders, Assistants and Helpers as well as a generous collection of well turned out and helpful Scouts including, especially, Will Allman who produced himself a ‘Name the Teddy‘ game and supplied the prize.

Not deterred by heavy rain in the morning was the Underwood family and Scout Daniel who went valiantly out and about to the Wylde Green Shops distributing Programmes which resulted in lots of new faces coming to see what we were all about and spending their money. Other new faces - and there were lots of them - would have been as a direct result of the earlier programme distribution by all of the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts so to all of you, thank you for playing your very important part.

Overall, the Fair was a great success. We didn’t achieve the same amount as in previous years at The Auction but that was mainly because it was not possible this year to obtain as many vouchers as previously. In all other areas, the amount of money raised this year was almost the same as last.

So, thank you for your donations, for your involvement and for coming, it really was worthwhile!

It is important that WE have plenty of this type of content for OUR sale to ensure it’s continuity and .success. Please start sending no longer required items down to the HQ each week. We will be able to accept Bric-a-Brac and similar but only after the School Summer Holidays

Scout Meeting 05/05/2011

Scout Meeting 05/05/11

Hi All,

On Thursday 5th May we showed the Scouts how to lay and light a simple fire, a skill that will be very useful on all the camps we will be going on.

However when we are on camp, the Scouts need to remember that they will have to collect the wood as well as chop it themselves first!

Each group managed to get a good fire going and once they were established, Calico (Jason) showed the Scouts how to make good old American s'mores.

A s'more (sometimes spelled "smore") is a traditional nighttime campfire treat popular in the United States and Canada, consisting of a roasted marshmallow and a layer of chocolate sandwiched between two pieces of graham cracker.

County Air Rifle Shooting Competition 2011

Hi All,

On Saturday 9th April 2011, four of our Scouts participated in this year’s County Air Rifle Shooting competiton held at the National Indoor Shooting centre in Wolverhampton.

This was as a result of us winning the District competition in February.

Each Scout took turns to fire at several targets some 10m away and their cards were marked accordingly.

At the end of the competition, the scores of each team were added up and put into rankings.

I am pleased to announce that our team of four came 8th overall.

We had a young team taking part this year and their success is due in no small part to all of our sessions we had at the Sutton Coldfield Shooting club for the Master-at-Arms badge.

Well done to Harry, Bradley, Vincent & Lawrence for taking part and for representing the 6th so well.

Yours in Scouting

The Scout Leaders
