Hike on Cannock Chase 21/03/09

Hike on Cannock Chase 21/03/09

On Saturday 21st March we took the troop for a 9 mile hike across Cannock Chase.
The weather was perfect for walking.
11 Scouts gathered near HQ on Saturday morning and were transported to the car park near Rifle Range Corner.
We then walked along the Heart of England Way to the Katyn Memorial and stopped for a 5 minute break.
From there we carried on to the Glacial Boulder where we stopped for another short break before continuing on up to the Stepping Stones and had lunch.
Half an hour later we picked up the Staffordshire Way and walked through Sherbrook Valley.
We then crossed Sher Brook and took a detour from our original route through Pepper Slade.
We rested briefly near the Rifle Range before finally ending our journey back at the car park.
During our hike we bumped into several teams taking part in the annual Chase walk, which we hope to take part in ourselves next year.
Please click on the photo above for more images taken on our hike.
Well done to everyone who took part. Our next challenge will be to hike for a day, camp overnight and then hike for another day before returning home!

Scout Meeting 09/03/09

Scout meeting 09/03/09

From Scout meeting 09/03/09

Last week the troop planned several menus for camp including breakfast, lunch, dinner & supper.
They were then given the choice as to what they would like to cook the following week, all good practise for the many exciting camps coming up this year.
That choice was chicken tikka, rice and naan bread, just what every growing Scout needs!
So, this week we got out the camp cookers and tables from the stores and set up a cooking area in HQ, including fire buckets.
However, before the troop did any cooking we discussed food preparation and hygiene and then went through how to make the main dish of the evening.
Incidentally, several of the naan breads were baked in an oven made out of a cardboard box. How can this be done I hear you ask?!
Well, the troop will be given chance to make one of their own later on in the year to try at a camp. Keep visiting this site for updates..
The evening was a great success with everyone taking part and doing their bit, including the washing up and putting equipment away.
Just click on the photo above to see the results of our efforts.
One of our Scouts remarked 'OMG, it's awesome'!
We think that says it all.

Best regards,

Skip, Emily & Adam

Pancakes on a tin can!

Scout Meeting 23/02/09

During Shrove Tuesday week we decided to mark the occasion by cooking pancakes on top of tin cans!
The bite sized pieces of flour, eggs, milk & water were poured on top of the tins and heated underneath by tea-lights.
The troop constructed the portable heaters themselves using some basic tools such as snips, a file and a drill.
Once the pancakes had been flipped & browned off nicely on both sides, they were covered lightly with sugar and lemon and devoured by the hungry cooks.
Click on the image above to see the rest of the photo's we took during the meeting.
Over the next few weeks we will be creating menu's for our upcoming camps and cooking some more adventurous dishes.
Did someone mention a 'cardboard box' oven?!
